Glossy Pages

There is something about a new magazine, pages all glossy and unread, that I just love. I start by flipping cover to cover, page by page. Then I go back and read each article while I sit with my coffee. Some are better than others. But even when they are shallow and fairly useless, IContinue reading “Glossy Pages”

Where my Writing Lives

This is where my stories and poems live. I create them on the computer, but I keep them in a notebook. In black ink, I hand-write each one, then place the journal on my shelf with all my other books. This way, I can’t lose them with a computer breakdown or a lost USB. TheyContinue reading “Where my Writing Lives”

My New Homework

If there was one thing I always loved as a kid, it was a new project. Planning, creating, cutting, and gluing. Making posters was fun. Now, I’m making a poster to promote the photography class I’ll be teaching to kids this fall. And I’m having fun with it all over again!

Ten Ways to Enjoy the Little Things

September is here. And with it, new activities, schedules, homework, packing lunches, and hectic mornings. In a small attempt to take the quiet moments of summer with me, I have compiled a list of things I have learned about appreciating the small details. The Writing Life

Sometimes, it is the words on a page that give me pause. I love to learn from books, to gather ideas from books. At the moment, I am reading Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg. I am slowly beginning to think of myself as a writer, aiming to have published work. But here isContinue reading “The Writing Life”

Weekly Writing Challenge: I Remember

I am at my Nanna’s and I am four years old. My grandmother is a comfortable and loving presence. Other people are there, but they exist in my memory as shadows. Logically, I know who they are, but I cannot see them. We are waiting. My younger sister is with me. She is two andContinue reading “Weekly Writing Challenge: I Remember”

Morning

I set my alarm for 6:00 am, every day. Even in the summer. I do this for a few reasons: To get the most out of my day, to write, and because I love mornings. I especially love quiet mornings, before the kids are up and there are things to do, places to go. IfContinue reading “Morning”

For This

I am grateful for this. For having a blog again and waking each morning to writing. It is helping me to notice the small moments that make me happy. It is something to look forward to. It is also a way to use some of the thousands of photos I have on my hard drive!Continue reading “For This”

Minute Moments

If I’ve learned one thing in my 38 years on this incredible planet, it’s that I need to appreciate life’s little details.  It’s what grounds me and what calms me.  It’s what calls to me when I write.  It’s also the basis of my photography (I run and Etsy shop called Sand and Petals).  Whether it’sContinue reading “Minute Moments”
